The Project Week
This year, year 11 Bradfield students are working with the Australian Museum to celebrate its 200th anniversary.
The Project is now around the halfway mark, and students are partaking in their First Project Week.
This week is a great way to simulate an industry workplace environment, especially one that practices collaboration to meet the brief of the Australian Museum.
To get some insight into what makes Project Week valuable, I spoke with our College Director, Anna Messariti, and one of our amazing Project Directors, Michael McLennan.
Anna Messariti
Anna is the Project's Executive Producer. When I asked her about the significance of Project Week, she was quick to emphasise how this week allows students to move beyond theory and into real, hands-on practice in “an intensive week of working”.
This kind of project-based learning is valuable because it helps students build essential skills in communication and collaboration, which are crucial in any creative field.
Anna highlights that even artists who typically work independently still need to communicate their ideas, whether it’s with galleries, clients, or collaborators.
Project Week provides a space for students to develop these abilities in a realistic and supportive environment.
Michael McLennan
Michael McLennan, one of our Project Directors, stressed that one of the main reasons why Project Week is valuable is simply because it gives students uninterrupted time to fully develop their ideas and build real momentum in their work.
As Michael explains, “there are certain things you can’t film in three hours, but you can do it in five", highlighting how the longer sessions at Bradfield allow for deeper creativity and higher-quality outcomes.
It also creates exciting opportunities, like collaborating with guest artists and participating in creative “sprints” which keep students engaged and inspired while showcasing their talents.
